European Conference on Domestic Violence

Welcome

Following the success of the previous European Conferences of Domestic Violence in Belfast,
Porto, Oslo and Ljubljana the V European Conference on Domestic Violence (ECDV) –
Domestic Violence and Precarity will be held from 11th – 13th of September 2023 in
Reykjavík, Iceland.

The aim of the conference is to bring together researchers, students, professionals,
practitioners and policy makers from Europe and further afield to share and build knowledge
and experiences on a wide range of issues concerning domestic violence. We hope that the
conference contributes to building bridges between different perspectives, disciplines and
areas of expertise in the field of domestic violence.

The ECDV views domestic violence as encompassing a range of different types of gender-
based violence and abuse, among others including intimate partner violence, stalking, honour-
based violence and elderly abuse.

The visibility of domestic violence has increased with the COVID-19 global pandemic as in
any emergency.

This motivated our focus on the theme of precarity. The COVID – 19 raised
new barriers to building inclusive societies. Pre-existing gender gaps have amplified the crisis
asymmetrically between men and women, even as women have been at the frontlines of
managing the crisis as essential workers. In addition and importantly, recent political and
ideological crisis arising from the war in Ukraine further motivated the emphasis on precarity
as an overall theme for the conference.

The organisation of this conference is a result of a cooperation between the School of
Education and the Educational Research Centre at the University of Iceland.
We are confident that the V ECDV 2023 will be an inspiring event for all of us. On behalf of
the Scientific Committee of the Conference and the Organising Committees we look forward
to warmly welcoming you to Iceland.

Guðrún Kristinsdóttir and Stephanie Holt, Co-Chairs of the Scientific Committee.
